Participants: Kina Murphy
Location: Chobe National Park, Botswana
Activities: Kina Murphy is an American researcher studying lions under the direction of CARACAL. Some of the lions have been leaving the protection of Chobe National Park on the northern Botswanan border and infiltrating the populated areas surrounding the park. Although there is sufficient wild game for them to eat, they are attacking and killing domestic animals to the consternation of local farmers. Kina’s challenge is to study the park’s lion population, understand there behavior and institute a program to keep the lions within the park boundaries. This will avoid death at the hands of the irate farmers. The flight over the park allowed Kina to take aerial photographs that will help her to correlate landmarks with the transects she will use to track these lions.

Participants: Dr. Mark Vanderwalle, Kina Murphy
Location: Chobe National Park, Botswana
Activities: Mark is studying ungulates, hoofed mammals, in Chobe National Park and surrounding areas. On this flight we installed tracking antennas on the aircraft and headed west from Kasane Airport to locate 15 radio collared zebra and wildebeest. During the three hour flight we were able to locate 7 animals, of which several were sending out a mortality signal, indicating that either the animal had died or the collar was no longer attached. |
